Local initiatives

Aruba is working on adapting the SDGs to its national context for its effective implementation by 2030. This will be done including through the National Strategic Plan (NSP) during the period of 2020-2022, which is based on the SDGs. The Government of Aruba (GOA) remains committed to implementing the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

This is Betto's story

Betto was in an accident while he was a taxi driver, losing sight in both his eyes. With help of his son he is still able to compete in running marathons and also coaches the Malmok running team. He has overcome his disability and still excels at a sport that would typically require you to be able to see.

The Aruba Kidpreneurs Stichting
The Aruba Kidpreneurs Stichting is a non-profit entity with the objective of attracting donor fundings and corporate sponsorships, in order to offer entrepreneurship and financial literacy programmes to children from disadvantaged communities. Teaching kids how to manage their money is educating them about creating their own destinies.

Mi mami is a private group for enthusiastic mothers that offers motivation, support and the necessary tools to other mothers on Aruba.

HIAS is an international Jewish American non-profit organization that provides humanitarian aid and assistance to refugees.
Fundacion pa nos comunidad
Fundacion pa nos comunidad supports vulnerable groups and voluntary initiatives in the Aruban community. It is the official food bank on Aruba.
Kiwanis
Kiwanis is an international foundation that consists of members of every age that attend regular meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that help their communities.

FAVI (Fundacion Arubano di esnan Visualmente Incapacita) is a foundation stimulated from the Netherlands. Their purpose is to assist and guide visually impaired and blind individuals, with the aim to contribute to their enjoyment of life and, where desirable and possible, their personal development and integration.

Trampolin pa Trabou wants to contribute to a better living environment, understanding and respecting others regardless of their disabilities. By working at Trampolin pa Trabou, individuals with disabilities gain work experience and develop their social and cognitive skills. The most important thing is that everyone has a lot of fun and is able to discover his/her own worth and talents.

This is sarah quita's story

Sarah-Quita Offringa (born 4 July 1991) is a professional sailor from Aruba. She competed in the PWA World Tour windsurfing competition and has won many international competitions. Not only is the health of the Oceans important and Climate change, but she has increasingly realized how our whole ecosystem, on land and in the ocean is interlinked with eachother and pivotal for our survival. She wants the future generations to have the opportunities to fulfill their dreams and by working together they can achieve this.

This is vadavas' story

Vadavas is a jewelry store that was founded by a single mother who created this new concept in Aruba and started this business with only $20. Vadavas employs mostly single mothers and allows them to work from home, this has the added benefit that they do not need to be away from their children. Single mothers make Vadavas products in their own homes and is a source of income for single mothers.

Pack for a Purpose
Bucuti and Tara beach resort has been involved with Pack for a Purpose since 2015, in which its guests can participate by donating what they don’t need when they visit the resort. Small space, little effort, big impact. The donations go to children at the Imeldahof Children’s Home, which is an orphanage on Aruba. 424 guests have donated since the start of the program.
FLEXO
At FLEXO they mediate in the fulfillment of job vacancies, focusing on long-term cooperation between employees and organizations.
Petite Greens
Petite Greens is a local farmer that has the opportunity to grow little pieces of art under the Caribbean sun. They grow the best microgreens for chefs in the Caribbean. Striving for perfection, searching for the exact shape, growing circumstances and most of all bringing the purest taste to the best restaurants of Aruba and the Caribbean.
Plastic Beach Party
Plastic Beach Party is a crowdsourced/community driven recycling initiative. The plastic that is picked up or delivered by locals is used to create locally valued products. Their goal is to see how recycled plastic could be used to improve Aruba.
Smart Communities
Real life testing and demonstration is a must to be able to move sustainable technologies from concept to practical application. Smart Community Aruba (SCA), a 20 unit residential neighborhood aimed at sustainable living, is now inviting partners to research, test and demonstrate sustainable technology. Key objective is knowledge development relating to scalable technology solutions and business models to help make Aruba’s transition to sustainable energy a reality. Aruba enjoys over 5000 wind and 2000 solar hours the year round, which makes it a suitable island to perform real life tests with sustainable living housing.

Fundacion contra violencia relacional provides assistance to victims of domestic violence. Formely known as Fundacion pa Hende Muher den dificultad FCVR provides physical protection through temporary shelter to victims and their families and guide and refer clients for psycho-social and legal assistance.

Nurianne was crowned Miss Aruba World 2018 and she has been involved in foundations like the Aruba Heart Foundation. Pageants are platforms for women to find empowerment, open opportunities and learn life-long skills like public speaking. Promote important causes, increase self confidence, and challenge beauty standards.

The Young Voices programme of the SDG Commission to raise support for the SDGs among the youth and the community at large. In this programme, young people from the Aruban community can support and lead their respective peers in the area of sustainability.The goal of the SDG Young Voices programme is to:

  1. Create greater awareness among the youth, and the general public on sustainability and the SDGs.
  2. Inspire the community in economic, social, or environmental sustainability.
